Surgat

Surgat

Surgat is a minor demon mentioned in the Grimoire of Pope Honorius III, the Grimorium Verum, and The Book of Ceremonial Magic by Arthur Edward Waite(1913). He is listed as "Surgat who opens all locks."

Invocation

For Sunday, to Surgat (otherwise Aquiel)...

This experience is [best] performed at night from eleven to one o'clock. He will demand a hair of your head, but give him one of a fox, and see that he takes it. His office is to discover and transport all treasures and perform anything that you may will.
Write in his circle: TETRAGRAMMATON, TETRAGRAMMATON, TETRAGRAMMATON. ISMAEL, ADONAY, IHUA. And in a second circle: Come, SURGAT! Come, SURGAT! Come, SURGAT!

Surgat also appears to be Latin for "arise".

In Fiction

In Harlan Ellison's short story "Grail", Surgat is an important character, unlocking some of the barriers in the protagonist's path...for a terrible price.
