Primera División Peruana 1997

The 1997 season of the Primera División Peruana, the top category of Peruvian football (soccer), was played by 14 teams. The national champion was Alianza Lima, after of 19 years of not leave champion.

The national championship was divided into two half-year tournaments, the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura. Each was played on a home-or-away round-robin basis. The winners of each would play for the national title in a playoff. However, since the same club won both tournaments, it won the national championship automatically.

Following-season Copa Libertadores berths went to the champion, as well as to the winner of a "Liguilla" (literally "small league") tournament featuring teams between second and seventh place on the aggregate table. This had a round-robin format, with the team obtaining the best results in matchups during the "regular season" playing at home. The runner-up would qualify for the Copa CONMEBOL. The bottom four teams on the aggregate table were relegated.

*Club Lawn Tennis and Juan Aurich promoted to Primera División 1998
**Lawn Tennis won the Segunda División (Second Division) 1997, a second-level league for teams in the Lima area.
**Juan Aurich (Chiclayo) won the Copa Perú 1997 after defeating UPAO (Trujillo) 1-0 in a playoff, after they tied for first place in the six-team final round held in Lima, with 12 points from five games each.
