Primera División Peruana 1996

Primera División Peruana 1996

The 1996 season of the Primera División Peruana, the top category of Peruvian football (soccer), was played by 16 teams. The national champions were Sporting Cristal. With this title they obtained three consecutive titles known as a "Tricampeonato" in Peru; the first time in Cristal's history.

The 1996 season was the last season played with a single tournament in a year and a Liguilla at the end of the year. The season was played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. The first berth for Copa Libertadores 1997 went to the champions of the season. The other berth for the Copa Libertadores went to the winners of the "Liguilla" at the end of the year. The second-place team automatically qualified for the Liguilla with a bonus point while the teams that placed third to eighth contested a playoff round. The runners-up of the Liguilla qualified for the Copa CONMEBOL 1997. Four teams were relegated, reducing the number of teams in the first division to 14. Two teams from the Copa Peru and the Segunda División were promoted for the following season.
