Earl of Clanbrassil

Earl of Clanbrassil

The title of Earl of Clanbrassil was created twice in the Peerage of Ireland.

NB There is in County Down a Clandeboye estate, 12 miles from Belfast and 2 miles from Bangor. It seems possible that "Clandboye" and "Claneboye" are misspellings.

On 4 May 1622 James Hamilton was created Viscount Clandboye in the Peerage of Ireland. The 2nd Viscount, of the same name, was created Earl of Clanbrassil on 7 June 1647. On the death of the 2nd Earl in 1675, both titles became extinct.

On 13 May 1719, another James Hamilton was created Viscount of Limerick and Baron Claneboye, and "Earl of Clanbrassil" on 24 November 1756. On the death of the 2nd Earl in 1798, these three titles became extinct.
