History
Orpund is first mentioned in 1255 as Orpunt.[2]
Geography
Orpund has an area, as of 2009[update], of 3.96 square kilometers (1.53 sq mi). Of this area, 1.55 km2 (0.60 sq mi) or 39.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.48 km2 (0.57 sq mi) or 37.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.82 km2 (0.32 sq mi) or 20.7% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.09 km2 (22 acres) or 2.3% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.3% is unproductive land.[3]
Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.8% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 14.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.0%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 30.6% is used for growing crops and 7.1% is pastures, while 1.5% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[3]
Orpund is located on the left bank of the Nidau-Büren channel. It includes the village of Orpund, the former Gottstatt Abbey and the hamlet Zihlwil.
Demographics
Orpund has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 2,671.[1] As of 2007[update], 11.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 3.7%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (86.7%), with French being second most common ( 6.6%) and Italian being third ( 1.5%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 34.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (25.8%), the FDP (14.4%) and the local small left-wing parties (7.7%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 62.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.1%. In Orpund about 73.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Orpund has an unemployment rate of 1.73%. As of 2005[update], there were 21 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 7 businesses involved in this sector. 419 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 35 businesses in this sector. 273 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 50 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[2]
