Opaheke is a suburb of Auckland, in northern New Zealand. Located to the south of the Papakura, and 32 kilometres south of Auckland CBD. Opaheke is under authority of the Papakura District Council. The suburb makes up the southernmost part of the Auckland metropolitan area.

History

Opaheke became recognised as an independent suburb in 1989. The previous area was referred to as a small area of greater Papakura, but has now developed into a separate residential area.

During the major reformation of local government, also in 1989, the Opaheke area was included into the Papakura District boundaries.

From October 2010, after a review of the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance, the entire Auckland Region will be amalgamated into a single city authority. As well as the current Papakura District, all other territorial authorities will be abolished and the entire area will be dissolved into a single Auckland city council. The suburb of Opaheke will now be in the Manurewa-Papakura Ward of the Auckland Council.

People

The most common ethnic group in Opaheke is European as at 2006, with 73.2 percent. Maori residents make up 16.9 percent of the suburb, and 5.1 percent being of Asian ethnicity.

According to the 2006 New Zealand census, (for residents aged 15 years and older) the most common occupational group in Opaheke is Professionals, and the least common group is Community and personal service workers, with an unemployment rate of 5.3 percent of the Opaheke population.
