metropolitan statistical area inMiddle Tennessee is the 39th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in theUnited States [ [http://www.census.gov/population/cen2000/phc-t29/tab06.xls Population in Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs) in Alphabetical Order and Numerical and Percent Change for the United States and Puerto Rico: 1990 and 2000] ] and the largestmetropolitan area in the state ofTennessee .It was originally designated by the
United States Census Bureau in 1950, when it consisted only of Davidson County. As surrounding counties increased in population densities and in the number of their residents employed within Davidson County, they met Census criteria to be added to the MSA. Davidson County is now joined with twelve other counties to form this MSA.Cities and towns
In addition to Nashville, incorporated cities and towns in the metropolitan area include Franklin, Brentwood, Spring Hill and Columbia to the south, Murfreesboro, La Vergne and Smyrna to the southeast, Lebanon and Mount Juliet to the east, Gallatin and Hendersonville to the northeast, and Goodlettsville, White House, and Springfield to the north.

The estimated population of the CSA as ofJuly 1 ,2007 , was 1,601,403.
