History/Information

John Burroughs Junior High School, named in honor of John Burroughs, opened in 1924 to 400 students and 23 teachers [Burroughs Middle School History [http://www.burroughsms.org/history.jsp?rn=7136923] ] .

The "Junior High" in the school's name was replaced with "Middle" at the beginning of the 1994-1995 school year to coincide with the school district's policy of placing 6th graders in middle schools, and 9th Graders as freshmen in High School. This was to ease overcrowding at many elementary schools.

The school is informally called "JB."

Gifted/High Achieved Magnet Program

John Burroughs offers a Gifted/ High Achieving Magnet (G/HA MAG) program, which began in 1978.

School uniforms

In the past, school uniforms were not worn. Since 2001, students are required to wear school uniforms [http://www.burroughsms.org/policies/standards_of_appearance.jsp?rn=4137963] .

Uniforms consist of khaki bottoms and white or Hunter green collared shirts.
