He playedhigh school football for Central High School in Memphis. He played college football at Tennessee under coachRobert Neyland .He entered
World War II , and was assigned to the Pacific Division. He earned a couple of medals of distinction, and earned the rank ofMajor . He served as a football coach at theUniversity of Arkansas as well.
