History

The radio station signed on in 1924 as WDBJ-AM at the 930 AM frequency and eventually developed into a full service station with a country music format. In 1941, the station moved to it's current 960 frequency. In 1969, the radio station and sister TV station, also called WDBJ, , were sold to separate owners. While the TV station retained the WDBJ call letters , the radio station's call letters were changed to WFIR , "First In Roanoke" . During the 1960s the station's music format evolved into a soft adult contemporary format which continued into the 1970s and 1980s before evolving into a full time news/talk format by the 1990s . One of the best known air personalities from WFIR's days as a music station was Ted Rogers , who was with the station from 1956 to 1990.
