In the seventeenth century the Province of Avalon was the area around the settlement of
Ferryland which upon the success of the colony grew to include the land held by Sir William Vaughan and all the land that lay between Ferryland andPetty Harbour .Sir
George Calvert had acquired a piece of Newfoundland and hired an agent CaptainEdward Wynne to set up headquarters in Ferryland.
