This would have completed the partialbeltway around Trenton formed by I-95 and I-295. The roadway would also have provided additional capacity crossing theDelaware River near the site of theBurlington-Bristol Bridge . The new crossing was intended to be toll free much like theScudders Falls Bridge (Interstate 95). The approach roadways on either side of the river would have been maintained by theNew Jersey Department of Transportation in New Jersey and thePennsylvania Department of Transportation in Pennsylvania (though at one point theBurlington County Bridge Commission was going to bulid the road in Pennsylvania after the state opposed the road until plans were made for an interchange with I-95). U.S. Route 13 &U.S. Route 130 ), and the terminus interchanges with I-95 & I-295 at a new Exit 46 [http://www.phillyroads.com/roads/I-895_NJ/ Interstate 895 (NJ-PA, unbulit)] URL accessed 26 September2008 ] giving the freeway four total interchanges from start to finish. Once the freeway met I-295, there were plans to extend it as the Route 72 freeway towardsLong Beach Island where it would meet the existing Route 72 at Route 70. [http://www.phillyroads.com/roads/NJ-72/ NJ 72 Freeway (unbulit)] URL accessed 26 September2008 ]It was originally planned as an interstate highway in 1968 and scheduled to be finished by 1978 at a cost of $84 million. However, rising costs and desire of funds for mass transit led to the cancellation of I-895 in 1981. [http://www.phillyroads.com/roads/NJ-72/ NJ 72 Freeway (unbulit)] URL accessed 26 September
2008 ]Vestiges of the I-895 proposal remain today. The large interchange between Interstate 95 and PA 413 was built to handle the large high speed ramps for I-895. [http://www.phillyroads.com/roads/I-895_NJ/ Interstate 895 (NJ-PA, unbulit)] URL accessed 26 September
