Lane Transit District

The Lane Transit District (LTD) is a public agency that provides public transportation in Lane County, Oregon, United States. The transit district serves the Eugene metropolitan area, including the neighboring cities of Springfield, Junction City, Creswell, and Cottage Grove. LTD began service in 1970 with 20 vehicles, and today provides over 20,000 bus trips a week. Many of LTD's riders are students; University of Oregon and Lane Community College students ride for free. Both programs are subsidized by student fees.

LTD is in the process of expanding its bus rapid transit line from downtown Springfield to the Gateway area in north Springfield. Named the Emerald Express (EmX), it began operations in January 2007, running from downtown Eugene to downtown Springfield. LTD chose bus rapid transit after a review process during which several transportation options, including light rail, were considered. It concluded that this was the best option for Eugene-Springfield's size and current transportation needs. LTD is currently in the process of expanding EmX to the West Eugene area.cite web|url=http://www.ltd.org/search/showresult.html?versionthread=0685a8bb89922e5910b4a290b76028d5|title=West Eugene EmX Expansion|publisher=LTD|accessdate=2008-05-22] The addition will over double EmX's current coverage area.

A board of directors, whose members are appointed by the Governor of Oregon, governs LTD. A combination of passenger fares, payroll taxes, and state and federal monies fund the system.
