Joan Patricia Murphy

Joan Patricia Murphy is Commissioner for the 6th district of Cook County, Illinois.

Early life

Murphy graduated from State Teachers College in Boston, Massachusetts.

Public service

Prior to her election as a commissioner, Murphy held several elected positions. From 1965 to 1969 she was the elected clerk of the Village of Crestwood, and later the elected clerk for Worth Township. She went on to be the elected Supervisor for Worth Township and Chief Investigator for the Cook County Board of Ethics.

Murphy is also on the Board of Directors for the [http://www.marchofdimes.com/ March of Dimes] , Greater Metropolitan Chicago Area. March of Dimes is committed to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Murphy is Chairperson of the Labor Committee and vice-Chairperson of the Industrial Claims Committee. Additionally, Murphy serves on 13 committees: Administration, Business and Economic Development, Education, Litigation, Tax Delinquency, Stroger and Cermak Hospitals, Oak Forest Hospital, Provident Hospital, Legislation and Intergovernmental Relations, Health and Hospitals, Finance, Zoning and Buildings, and Roads and Bridges. As Cook County Commissioner, Murphy voted to uphold a historical 2008 tax increase remaining the highest in the nation. As a result the Chicago Tribune has encouraged voters to vote against her in the 2010 elections.
