Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Sta. Lucia Realty made its debut in the league, parading top draft pick Zandro "Jun" Limpot and former players from the Presto franchise lead by Vergel Meneses. The All-Filipino Cup became the opening conference of the season, with Coney Island Ice Cream beating San Miguel Beer for the crown. Coney Island coach Vincent "Chot" Reyes made history as the first coach to claim a PBA crown in his maiden season with the team (also known as the "Cinderella finish"). The league also renamed the Second Conference as Commissioner's Cup, a tournament in honor of PBA Commissioner Rey Marquez. Corporate rivals Purefoods and Swift Mighty Meaty faced off for the second time, with Swift snagging their second championship behind the exploits of import Ronnie Thompkins. The said conference was also full of blockbuster trades that saw several players traded to other teams. Sta. Lucia decided to build its team around Limpot when it traded rising star Vergel Meneses to Swift for veterans Jack Tanuan and Ric Ric Marata, and Bong Hawkins to Alaska for troubled PBA superstar Bong Alvarez. However, the Commissioner's Cup was also marred with a free-for-all fight when Swift import Ronnie Thompkins lunged after Shell player Ricky Relosa after the latter hit him on the nape. The Third Conference, called Governor's Cup, saw the return of high-scoring import Tony Harris who lead Swift to the Finals, only to be beaten by San Miguel Beer, which had Kenny Travis and a solid local crew composed of Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic and Ato Agustin. Alvin Patrimonio made history as he won the first of his back-to-back MVPs.Champions
