American Century Investments is a privately-held investment management firm. Its headquarters are located at 4500 Main in Kansas City, Missouri, near the famous Country Club Plaza. It was formerly known as Twentieth Century Mutual Funds. The company was founded by James E. Stowers, Jr. in 1958. It employs around 2,000 people. From the personal wealth Mr. Stowers produced from American Century Investments, he started the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, a $2B biomedical research facility also located in Kansas City, MO.
American Century Investments was formed in late 1995 with the merger of Twentieth Century Mutual Funds and The Benham Group. Twentieth Century had specialized in equity funds; Benham had specialized in fixed income and money market funds. The combined company was reorganized and renamed American Century Investments as of January 1, 1997. It also still maintains offices at the old Benham headquarters in Mountain View, California.
The firm recently completed construction of a sculpture park at the corner of 44th St. and Main in Kansas City, MO, in conjunction with the Kansas City Art Institute.
