William Dennison Cary

William Dennison Cary

William Dennison Cary was the founder of Cary, Illinois, and one of its early prominent citizens. The town was named after him.

He was born in 1808 in Sandy Creek, New York. In 1830 he married Lodemia Ells who was just one year older than him. They had their first baby in 1832 and named it Cornelia. Then two years later they had another daughter named Hulda. In the next few years they added five more children to their family to make their family total nine people.

During this time while he was starting a family he purchased 242 acres in three separate purchases, thus creating the first section of Cary, Illinois. He built a red brick house in 1845 on West Main street. This house is still standing today, but is on a different lot on East Ross Street, where it was moved in 1966 when Ameritech bought the property on which it originally stood. Now the house also has two additions which have been added on over the years.
