Tirukkoyilur is a panchayat town in Viluppuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Etymology

'Tiru' + 'Kovil + 'oor' = holy temple village/place in tamil.

thiru + kai + vellore = muruganin thiru kayilerunthu purapatta vellal oruvaana oor.

in previous day it is called as nadunaadu(center city).

thiruvikraman + kovil + oor =tirukovilur.

History

Tirukoilur chief Malayaman ruled from this place around the 13th century. Tirukoilur chiefs were friendly with the Kadavas and Magadaimandalam chiefs. Malaiyaman is related to the Cholas through marriage.

Temples

Tirukkoyilur has many temples built prior to 12th century. Many great saint poets visited these temples and wrote many poems in praise of the god. Thirukoyilur sri veerateshwarar temple is one of famousashtaveeratanam temples in tamilnadu. Secondly another famous temple is thiruvikramaswamy templeis one of the temple from 108 divya desams.And "Arakandanallur" rock sivan temple is worshiped by panchapandaver.and from here only they started the 1st war during ahenganavasam, from this war only ghovravargal find pandavargal.In this temple there are 5 rock room and one bath place that was builted by panchapandavas.And near to the temple there is a bhiman kulam(pond) which is created by bhiman is there. Two km from Arakandanallur there is sacred temple "Lakshmi Narasyimar" located at north bank of thenpenai river . And there is a kabilar kundru.this a small rock and the temple is builted on the rock ,which is located in center of the the river thenpennai.This temple is buld by "poet Kabiler" and he died hear itself by fasting "vadaku irundhu oyer vidudhal" after he condut a marriage angavai and sangavai with adhiyemaan.

And near to tirukoilur some of the ancient temple are dhabovanam,adhi thiruvarangam,brindhavanam .

SRI VEERATESHWARAR TEMPLE

SRI VEERATESHWARAR TEMPLE is placed in kizhaiyur. One can come here through bus . Before the main terminal to the bus stand there is a stop [govt. hospital stop] and call an auto from there or just walk from there [it would take just 5 minutes] . The temple has been sung in praise by several nayanmars. There is lord shiva [sri veerateshwarar] and his parivarangals in this temple.This the one of the veerattanam.From hear only poet avayar is taken to himalayas by periya pillayar.And from hear only poet avayar wrote the famous "vinayagar agavel". In this temple only durgai amman having white eye.Near to the temple there is a samadhi of meyporoul nayanar.
