Shirur is a city and a municipal council in Pune district in the Indian state of Maharashtra."Shirur" is located on the boundaries of Pune and Ahmednagar districts on the banks of river "Ghod" The town is also known as "Ghodnadi" to distinguish the place among simillar places with the name "Shirur"."Ghodnadi" means river "Ghod" in native "Marathi" language.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Shirur had a population of 27,000. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Shirur has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%. In Shirur, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Communities

Population consists mix of Hidu including castes like "maratha",and other sub casts based on their profession like "goldsmith","Weaver",etc.These communities have formed diffrent colonies with their names in "Shirur".Other population include "Muslims","Jain's"(Mostly Marvadis) of "Shwetambar" sub community and few "Christians".Marvadis migrated here during the 19th century.The "British" had their Horse Stables here.The place is now been taken by "Maharashtra Government" and its the colony for irrigation employees.Lot of "Muslim" were taking care of these Stables with British army.

Education

There are schools giving education in native marathi language.Nagar palika municipal council has few schools in diffrent parts of town.They offer education from Nursery to class 7 in marathi.There is one school giving education in Urdu language since Shirur holds quite a large number of Muslim population.Schools like "Vidyadham Prashala","Rayat Shikshan Sanstha" are few among others.The schools offer education till higher secondary class 12.There are two Schools for convent education namely "New English School" from "Rayat Shikshan Sanstha","Rasiklal Dhariwal School" from "Shirur Shikshan Prasarak mandal"For higher education there are collages like "C.T.Bora collage" offering B.Com,B.A,BSc along with computer science.A sister concern "MDIRT" offers courses like BCS,MCA."Chhatrapti Sambhaji Shikshan sanstha" offers courses like BEd and B.Pharm at its "Bapusaheb Thite Collage"

Industry

Industry around Shirur bloomed around year 1994 when state of Maharashtra announced the industrial zone around Shirur including towns Karegaon,Dhok Sangvi and Ranjangaon.The industrial zone is know as MIDC Ranjangaon-Karegaon.Diffrent manufactures have set up their facilities here.Apolo tyres,Whirlpool of India(Refrigerator),LG Electronics(Television,Mobile handsets),Daewoo Electronics(Refrigerator),National Panasonic(Now acquired by Videocon group),Wheels India,Bajaj Electricals,Fritolay(Pepsico Holdings)manufacturing Lays potato chips,Fiat automobiles,Kirloskar,Swarovski,Ohsung,a Korian company manufacturing electronics parts are among few others who have set up their units here.

Places of interest in and around

Ramling(Old Shirur),a place for Lord Shiva's temple.It's been beleived that Lord Rama when he was in exile built the "Shiv Ling".Lots of people gather on wholy "Mahashivratri" here.
Ranjaongaon,a place for the "Mahaganapati",the Lord ganapati among one of the "Ashtvinayaka's"
Takli Haji,a place famous for the natural pot holes in the river "Kukdi"
Chincholi Morachi,the place has the habitat for hundreds of peacocks.
Vadhu Budruk,the place where "Chattrapti Sambhaji",the son of "Chattrapti Shivaji" was summoned to death by "Mughul Emperor "Aurangjeb"Nirvi,here is a Dam over the river "Ghod".
