The karunguzhi town is about 2 hours drive away from Chennai (Madras).
As of 2001 Indiacensus [GR|India] , Karunguzhi had a population of 11,265. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Karunguzhi has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 61%. In Karunguzhi, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.There are several industries are located in karunguzhi. One of the main business in karunguzhi is Rice. There are nearly 60 rice mills are there. Every day 2000 tones of good quality rice is distributed by mill owners and rice merchants to the various places in chennai.
There are several tourist spots are there in and around karunguzhi. One of the famous bird sanctuary in India is "VEDANTHANGAL BIRD SANTUARY". It is nearer to karunguzhi. Just 8 km from karunguzhi.The ancient fort is there. The fort was build by pallava emperor. There are two mountains are there in karunguzhi. One is a RENGANATHAR mountain. It is situated in Malipalayam. Nearly 700 metres height. Lord VISHNU temple is thereő in top of the mountain. The another one mountain is in karunguzhi forest. In the middle of the forest Lord SIVA temple is there.
Another one important is Lord GNANAGEREESWARAR temple. The temple is nice to see. It is one of the ancient temple nearly 100 years ago. The lake is also there with the size of nearly 500 acres. It is very useful for cultivation.
The Madurantakam town is there nearer to karunguzhi. Just 3 kmns from karunguzhi. The second biggest lake in tamilnadu is Madurantakam lake.
