Kantabanji is a town and a notified area committee in Balangir district in the Indian state of Orissa.

Geography

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Kantabanji had a population of 20,090. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Kantabanji has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 56%. In Kantabanji, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Kantabanji is located in the western part of Orissa, which is a business center for the near by villagers. It is a commercialplace which is dominated by marwari and the occupation of the people is diversified. Wheat and Rice is the major crop grown. The farmers usually sell all their crops to the private parties in a lower price for their survival. The climate of the town is quite extreme where in summers the temperature goes up to 47 degree celcius and in winters it goes to 5 degree celcius. In the rainy season it rains quite heavily (almost every year).

Politics

Current MLA from Kantabanji Assembly Constituency is independent candidate Haji Mohammad Ayub Khan, who won the seat in State elections of 2004. Previous MLAs from this seat were Santosh Singh Saluja of INC in 2000 and in 1995, Prasanna Pal of JD in 1990, independent candidate Chaitanya Pradhan in 1985, Prasanna Kumar Pal representing INC(I) in 1980 and representing INC in 1977.
