Gunupur is a town and a notified area committee in Rayagada district in the Indian state of Orissa.

Geography

Gunupur is located at coord|19.08|N|83.82|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/21/Gunupur.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Gunupur] ] . It has an average elevation of 83 metres (272 feet). It is located in the lap of the Eastern Ghat and on the banks of river Vamshadhara. It has a mixed climate of mountains & Coastal Plain. Its outer region is completely covered by forest.

Transport

A narrow gauge railway connects Gunupur with the town of Naupada in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. This railway is slated for conversion to Broad gauge under Project Unigauge.

Culture

Gunupur has a mixed culture of Orissa & Andhra Pradesh. The major language spoken in this region are Oriya and Telugu. Most people understand both the languages. As this area is situated in boarder of Andhra Pradesh some people can communicate in Telugu also. In recent times, the number of Hindi speaking people are increasing due to the Gandhi Institute Of Engineering & Technology, where majority of students are from outside Orissa.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Gunupur had a population of 21,196. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Gunupur has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72% and female literacy is 55%. In Gunupur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

Gunupur has a degree college which offers bachelors courses in science and arts. It also has an engineering college Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology (GIET) which intakes half the students on merit basis and other half on donation.

Politics

Current MLA from Gunupur Assembly Constituency is Hemabati Gamang of INC, who won the seat in State elections of 2004. Previous MLAs from this seat include Ram Murty Gamango who won this seat in 2000 as BJP candidate and as a JD candidate in 1990, Akshaya Kumar Gomango of INC in 1995, and Bhagirathi Gomango who won this seat as INC candidate in 1985 and 1977 and as INC(I) candidate in 1980.
