Dr. Santiago Bordaberry Herrán is a rural affairs activist from Uruguay [ 'Santiago Bordaberry' Wikipedia (in Spanish) ] .

Professional role

He has served as President of The Rural Society of Durazno, representing prominent economic actors in the region.

Santiago Bordaberry is also active in Roman Catholic causes.

Public profile and family background

He is a son of Juan Maria Bordaberry. Juan Bordaberry was President of Uruguay from 1972 to 1976.

In 2007 Bordaberry increased his profile in the Uruguayan media when he became involved in public controversy surrounding the imprisonment of his father, Juan Maria Bordaberry. He has argued that the setting aside of his father, former President Bordaberry's, sovereign immunity on the basis of evidence which would not stand the test of the courts for other individuals, amounts to an ideological persecution [ [http://www.carlismo.es/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=106] ] . Among the more prominent members of the Bordaberry family, Santiago is seen as indentifying more closely with the religious outlook of his father, former President Bordaberry, himself a very religious individual, as well as his strong association with rural affairs.

His brother Pedro Bordaberry is a former Tourism and Industry Minister, and a prominent member of the Uruguayan Colorado Party.

His grandfather, Colorado Party Senator Domingo Bordaberry, was also strongly identified with Ruralist leadership.
