- Bighorn Basin
The Bighorn Basin is a
plateau region andintermontane basin, approximately 100 miles (160 km) wide, in north-centralWyoming in theUnited States . It is bounded by theAbsaroka Range on the west, theBighorn Mountains on the east, and theOwl Creek Mountains andBridger Mountains on the south. It is drained to the north by tributaries of theBighorn River , which enters the basin from the south, through a gap between the Owl Creek and Bridger Mountains, as the Wind River, and becomes the Bighorn as it enters the basin. The region is semi-arid, receiving only 6-10 in (15-25 cm) of rain annually. The basin was explored by
John Colter in 1807. It was later transversed by theBridger Trail , which was blazed in 1864 byJim Bridger to connect theOregon Trail to the south withMontana . The route was important alternative to theBozeman Trail , which had crossed thePowder River Country , but had been closed to white settlers followingRed Cloud's War .The largest cities in the basin include the Wyoming towns of Cody, Thermopolis, Worland, and Powell.
Sugar beet s are grown on irrigated farms in the region.Geology
The Bighorn Basin forms a geologic
structural basin filled with more than 20,000 feet of sedimentary rocks fromCambrian toMiocene in age. Since the early 20th century the basin has been a significant source of petroleum, and has produced more than 1.4 billion barrels of oil. The principal source of oil is thePennsylvanian Tensleep Formation ; Other important petroleum horizons are theMississippian Madison Limestone and theCretaceous Frontier Sandstone . [John P. Weldon (1972) "The Big Horn Basin" in "Geologic Atlas of the Rocky Mountain Region", Denver:Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists , p.270-272.] Someuranium has been mined in the northern part of the basin, along theBighorn Mountains (see "Uranium mining in Wyoming ").Communities
