Established in 1958, it is run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, which is a minority institution within the Catholic Church. The school operates under the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education board.
The motto of the institution is Virtus et Scientia, meaning "Virtue and Knowledge".

The school started on 31 January 1957 and completed 50 years in 2007.
St Dominic Savio is the patron saint of the school.

DBPC uses the house system to foster a sense of competition and belonging. The four houses are Savio (red), Bosco (blue), Francis (yellow), and Rua (green). All activities in the school are organized according to the houses.
The Student Council comprises a select best who are the school leaders and student representatives.
Academics
The school has been consistently performing well in the ICSE and ISC examinations. In the academic year 2008-2009, the students secured a school average of 85.87% in the ICSE examinations and 87.38% in the ISC examinations, which is the highest in the city (Kolkata), and one of the highest in the country. In the academic year 2010-2011, the students secured a school average of 85.24% in the ICSE examination and 88.12% in the ISC examination[1], which is also the highest in Kolkata and one of the highest in the country.[citation needed]
Athletics
Don Bosco sports have coaching classes for each sport, the coaching classes are free for the players on the school team. The sports are:
- Basketball is the most popular sport in Don Bosco. There are two basketball courts. The school U-19 team is ranked at No. 6 out of all teams (state and school level) throughout India[citation needed]. A yearly tournament called the 'Bosco Challenge Shield' is held in October–November. Don Bosco had never lost the tournament for 26 years till 2007. The team won back the Bosco Challenge Shield in 2009.
- Cricket is a popular sport. Players play on the state teams.
- Football: over the past decade the football team has won several Inter School Catholic Schools and Inter Anglo Indian Schools Tournaments. A yearly tournament was started in the school from the 2007-2008 school year.
- Table tennis
- Badminton is popular during winter and is one of the newer sports introduced in the school.
- Debate In keeping with the traditions of the school, debating and public speaking have also been taken to new heights under the guidance of Mr. Anupam Banerjee and Mr. Barry Antunis.
There is a games room where students can play games like carrom and chess.
The school offers coaching classes for basketball, cricket, football, table tennis and karate.
The school has teams for rowing, golf, squash, tennis, badminton and swimming.
Facilities
The school has science laboratories and two computer laboratories. Facilities for sports include two basketball courts, a table tennis room, a skating rink and a football ground. The school has an auditorium with Dolby Digital Surround compatible sound system and JBL acoustics. The school has two Audio-Visual Rooms. Don Bosco also hosts one of the best fests of Kolkata, Bosco Fest.
Groups and Associations
- The Dramatic Group encourages student participation in drama and theatre.
- The Cyber Space Group is the computer science group fostering an interest in Computer Science and Information Technology. The best programmers of the city are in this group.
- Boy Scouts is an international movement for young boys. The scouts were National Champions in the 10th National Boscoree held at Chennai in 2006 and will retain the title till 2010.
- Media and Cultural Group organizes cultural events and provides a platform to the students to showcase their talents in fields like debates, elocution, extempore speech and music.
- Leadership Training Service helps the student to develop leadership skills through activities.
- Young Christian Students upholds the vision of Cardinal Joseph Cardijn.
- Interact Group is an international social service organization at the secondary school level. The Interact movement of the school functions under the guidance of its parent body, Rotary Club of Metropolitan East, Dist. 3290. The purpose of Interact is to provide opportunity for the youth to work together, foster leadership, friendship, international understanding and goodwill. The group is a subsidiary of Rotary International.
- Quiz Group promotes the extra-curricular activity of quizzing.
- Savio promotes sports and games. Savio organizes intra-school and inter-school tournaments during the academic year.
- Philately and Numismatics Group develops the hobby of stamp and coin collection.
- Science Group. which promotes interest in Scientific Research.
- Nature Group, the group with an outlook to save nature.
