RV Atlantis (AGOR-25)

R/V "Atlantis" is an oceanographic research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It is the host vessel of DSV "Alvin". It was named for the first research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, R/V "Atlantis" for which the Shuttle "Atlantis" is also named.

Built in Mississippi

"Atlantis" was built by Halter Marine Inc., Gulfport, Mississippi. She was laid down on 16 August 1994 and launched on 1 February 1996. She was delivered to the U.S. Navy on 25 February 1998, as R/V "Atlantis" (T-AGOR-25) a Thomas G Thompson-class oceanographic research ship.

Operational history

No data has yet been provided on the operation of the ship by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

Sister ships

The "Atlantis" and three other research ships were all built to the same basic design. The three sister ships are "R/V Thomas G. Thompson" (UW), "R/V Roger Revelle" (Scripps) and "NOAAS Ronald H. Brown" (NOAA).
