R/V "Atlantis" is an oceanographic
research vessel operated by theWoods Hole Oceanographic Institution . It is the host vessel of DSV "Alvin". It was named for the first research vessel operated by theWoods Hole Oceanographic Institution , R/V "Atlantis" for which the Shuttle "Atlantis" is also named.Built in Mississippi
"Atlantis" was built by Halter Marine Inc.,
Gulfport, Mississippi . She was laid down on 16 August 1994 and launched on 1 February 1996. She was delivered to theU.S. Navy on 25 February 1998, as R/V "Atlantis" (T-AGOR-25) a Thomas G Thompson-classoceanographic research ship .Operational history
