Gardhiwala is a city and a municipal council in Hoshiarpur district in the state of Punjab, India.

Demographics

Garhiwala is situated on GT-Road or Military Road, 30 kilometers away from the city of Hoshiarpur. The town of Garhdhiwala was originally named as "Garh Devi Wala" after an incident in which a cow started giving milk automatically during a flood in the town. Some saints which were passing by saw the scene and informed the villegers that it is a place of spiritual importance. The saints along with some villegers started mining the area. After sometime they found a sculpture of Goddess Durga .The villegers kept this sculpture in a temporary temle. That is how this town came to known as Garhdiwala.
It is also said that Maharaja Ranjit Singhgave away a few money from his treasure.As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Gardhiwala had a population of 6263. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Gardhiwala has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 74%. In Gardhiwala, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.this town has the history of creating few good families in the modern era , namely - TALWAR JEWELLERS who have 6 leading gold and diamond showrooms in chandigarh also belong to this townn . it has also produced some brave soldiers like Lt Col Bachhiter singh Sahota who laid down his life for the nation on 29 sep 1996 while fighting the anti national elements. presently a large no. of people are settled in USA , UK and other european countries.Some important and famous people associated with this town are-Dr. M S RANDHAWA, Principal BHARPUR SINGH-- who became vice -chancellor of guru nanak dev university later,was founder principal of khalsa college - a large no of youngsters have joined army from this town , they are Colonel amarjit sinfh sahota , colonel varinder kumar sharma, colonel nirmal singh dogra , colonel naresh talwar, col vijay kumar gautam.
