Dasua (Dasuya) is a city and a municipal council in Hoshiarpur district in the state of Punjab, India. The city name was derived from its historical events as it was destroyed and rebuilt ten times, hence the name Dasuya (Da meaning “Ten” and Suya “Built”).

Geography

Location

Dasua is situation on the National highway 1A which connects Jammu and Kashmir to rest of the India. City is well connected with Rail and road with rest of India. Major cities in the vicinity of Dasua are Hoshiarpur (48km), Jalandhar (56 km), and Pathankot (56km). State highways running through Dasua connects Hoshiarpur, Talwara, Hajipur to the town. Other connecting roads connect Dasuya with Amritsar through Shri Hargovindpur, Daulatpur through Kamahi Devi and Kapurthla through Miani and Begowal.

City serves as a major transportation hub towards Himachal from Northern and Central Punjab.

Dasua railway station is well connected with all parts of India. Trains towards Kanyakumari, Madras, Trivandrum, Mangalore, Mumbai, Guwahati, Kolkotta, Indore, Delhi, Patna, Lucknow, Kanpur, Haridwar, Ambala, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Udhampur and Jammu passes through Dasua.

Economy

Dasua's per capita income is higher than rest of Punjab which itself is one of the most prosperous states of India. Dasua and its villages receive remitance from western countries which is a major source of income. Agriculture is the leading source of Income. Youth from Dasua serves Indian Armed forces in all capacities. City is also a major supplier of bricks for construction works in Himachal and Punjab. A single sugar mill and distillary in Randhawa (Dasua) is a largest sugarcane consumer in Northern Punjab. There are several small and medium scale agriculture based industries in the town.

Ucchi Bassi near Dasua is a cantonment area that relies upon Dasua for crucial supplies. Military exercises are often carried out in the villages around Dasua. Politics

A traditional congress hub Dasua which always vited Shri R C Dogra surprised everyone by voting Sardar Amarjit Singh Sahi (BJP) as MLA from Dasua in recent elections. This may be attirbuted to the stunted growth during city during congress era and rising of rival town Mukerian. Numerous attempts has been made to get district status for Dasua. On redrawing of Punjab and Himchal borders, Una which was part of Dasuya was transferred to Himachal and made as a district.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Dasua had a population of 20,118. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. The average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79% and, female literacy is 73%. In Dasua, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Dasuya, is a historic town dating back to Mahabharta Epic. Pandavas supposedly had lived here for some period. Ruins of old temples belonging to Pandwas are still in existence. National highway 1A passes right through the middle of the town. Railways station of Dasuya is the busiest railway station in the Hoshiarpur district. There are two colleges in Dasuya

History

It is believed that it was once surrounded by a huge wall, which had various gates. “We used to live in a house directly opposite the railway station. In 1947, when we left Dasuya, there were still remains of the gates, about 3 or 4 miles towards the north of the city.” – Abdul Majid Khan, Resident of Dasuya before the Partition.
