In October 2006, 97.3 WKBC was picked by the music critics of Charlotte's Creative Loafing Magazine as the Best "Charlotte" radio station of 2006; even though WKBC is located roughly an hour outside of Charlotte. WKBC-FM can be heard as far south as Rock Hill, SC, as far west as Johnson City, TN, as far north as Bluefield, WV and as far east as Greensboro, NC.The transmitter is located about 5 miles south of North Wilkesboro in southern Wilkes County. To improve its signal in Charlotte, WKBC plans a translator at 93.1 FM.
