- Kirsty McCabe
Kirsty was born and raised in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, although you probably can’t tell from her accent these days.
An interest in how the Earth works inspired her to study Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh. On graduating with a first class Honours degree, Kirsty spent three months as an intern at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. As well as getting to grips with driving on the wrong side of the road, she used satellite magnetic data to interpret the underlying crustal structure of parts of Australasia.
She then headed off to the University of Oxford to look for evidence of climate change in old volcanic soils on the Greek island of Santorini (Thera). While at Oxford she was made President of the Jesus College Graduates, learnt how to row and dabbled with karate. It was during her time at Oxford that she was offered a three-month internship at New Scientist magazine which she enjoyed so much that she worked there as a sub-editor for four years.
Kirsty joined the BBC Weather team in September 2003. She initially started her training on new media forecasts with regular broadcasts on BBC Digital's interactive service and online. She completed the first part of her forecaster training at the Met Office College in 2004 and returned to the BBC Weather Centre. In 2005 she passed her advanced forecaster exams, and is now broadcasting across a range of television and radio channels.
She is something of a self-confessed gym bunny and enjoys running, swimming and yoga, and sings with a local choir whenever her shifts allow. Kirsty is godmother to her niece, Eilidh, and lives in south east London.
Kirsty is the main presenter for the weather for BBC News at Ten on BBC One
