Ronan Curran (born 1981) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club St. Finbarr's and with the Cork senior inter-county team. He is regarded by many commentators as one of the best centre-backs in the current game.

Playing career

Club

Curran plays his club hurling and football with the famous St. Finbarr's club on the south side of Cork city. He has enjoyed some success at underage level, however, Ronan has yet to win a senior county title.

Inter-county

Ronan first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the late 1990s as a member of the Cork minor hurling team. He won both Munster and All-Ireland honours in 1998 in this grade. The following year Curran won a Munster medal with Cork’s minor football team, however, there was no subsequent All-Ireland success. Curran later joined the county’s under-21 teams, however, he had little success in this grade. He made his senior debut for the Cork hurlers in 2003 and quickly captured a Munster medal following a victory over Waterford. Cork later qualified for their first All-Ireland final appearance since 1999 and, once again, it was old rivals Kilkenny who provided the opposition. In an exciting championship decider it was the Noresiders who emerged victorious. In 2004 Cork lost their Munster crown to Waterford in one of the greatest games of hurling ever played. They later qualified for All-Ireland final via the back-door system where they met Kilkenny for the second consecutive year. The game itself failed to live up to expectations, however, victory went to Cork giving Curran his first All-Ireland medal. In 2005 Cork defeated Tipperary in the provincial final giving Curran a second Munster medal. For the third time in three years Cork reached the All-Ireland final where Galway provided the opposition. The men from the West failed to score for the last ten minutes which gave Cork a 1-21 to 1-16 victory. Curran had captured his second All-Ireland medal. Cork continued their provincial dominance in 2006 with Curran winning a third Munster title following a win over Tipperary. A fourth All-Ireland final appearance beckoned for Cork and the prospect of winning a third All-Ireland title in-a-row loomed large. Age-old rivals Kilkenny were Cork’s opponents on the occasion, however, it was the Leinstermen who emerged victorious and put an end to Cork’s treble hopes. Cork’s hurlers had a poor year in 2007. The team lost to Waterford and Tipperary and were eventually knocked out of the All-Ireland series in a quarter-final replay with Waterford.

Provincial

Curran has also lined out with Munster in the Railway Cup inter-provincial competition. He captured a winners’ medal in this competition in 2005 as Munster defeated Leinster.
