television station inDecatur, Texas , serving the Dallas/Fort Worth market as a Spanish-languageindependent station on channel 29. KMPX is owned by José and Lenard Liberman's broadcasting firm,Liberman Broadcasting .History
The channel 29 allocation in North Texas has been around for a long time. Legendary radio broadcaster Gordon McLendon got a construction permit to put channel 29 on the air as KLIF-TV (callsign to have stood for Oak Cliff) in 1953, and would've been sister station to KLIF-AM. Their broadcasting license was issued that year, but they never went on the air. Since TVs were not required to receive UHF until
1964 , McLendon apparently had second thoughts about developing a station that might not have any viewers. Prior to that, their license was cancelled in1955 .There are unconfirmed reports a station on channel 29 went on the air in 1964 from
Downtown Dallas as KAEI-TV, broadcasting financial news. However, poor reception reportedly led to their demise that same year, and in1966 , three applicants tried to take over channel 29 while the station remained dark. After years of debating, KMPX was established in
1993 and was originally affiliated with theDaystar Television Network until 2004, when the network acquiredKDTN .Digital TV
On 17 February 2009 KMPX will turn off analog TV channel 29 and continue transmitting its digital signal on channel 30.
