South Main, Houston, Texas

South Main is an area in the southwestern part of Houston, Texas that straddles the 610 Loop Freeway and is inside Beltway 8.

South Main is bounded by Main Street and Old Spanish Trail on the northwest, Reliant Park on the northeast, Holmes on the south, and Almeda on the east. It is located east of the Willowbend, Willow Meadows, and Westwood neighborhoods, and southwest of Braeswood Place.

South Main's location makes it easy to access to the Texas Medical Center area, the Museum District, and the the Galleria, as well as Rice Village, and Rice University.

In 1976, South Main became the focus of Houston's first area association. In 2005, the South Main Center Association (SMCA) was renamed the South Main Alliance. http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolboundarymaps/MadisonHS.pdf

Education

The area is zoned to the Houston Independent School District.

For elementary school:
* Residents inside the 610 Loop are zoned to Longfellow Elementary School
* Residents outside the 610 Loop are zoned to [http://es.houstonisd.org/shearnes Shearn Elementary School]

For middle school:
* Residents are zoned to Pershing Middle School, with Pin Oak Middle School as an option

While areas east of a vertical line from the intersection of South Main and Old Spanish Trail to Holmes Road are zoned to Cullen Middle School, there are no residents in that zone of the South Main area, as of 2006.

For high school:
* Residents inside of the 610 Loop are zoned to: Bellaire High School
* Residents outside of the 610 Loop are zoned to: James Madison High School
