During
World War I , Hazel Carter ofDouglas, Arizona stowed away on a ship toFrance to stay with her soldier husband, Corporal John Carter."New York Times", 1917.]When her husband was to be sent overseas, she tried to join the Red Cross so she could be near him, but was not accepted. She wore an Army uniform to conceal her identity. She was discovered and sent home. She died while her husband, John, was still overseas.
