Veens' finest hour came at the European Short Course Swimming Championships 1998 in Sheffield, where he ended up in second place in the 50 m freestyle. A half year later, at the 1997 FINA Short Course World Championships in Hong Kong, he won the bronze medal in the 50 m freestyle.
