- USS Prairie (1890)
USS "Prairie", formerly Morgan Liner S.S. "El Sol", was built in 1890 by
William Cramp and Sons ,Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . She was purchased by theUnited States Navy April 6 ,1898 from the Southern Pacific Co., and commissionedApril 8 ,1898 at New York, Comdr. C. J. Train in command.Prairie was converted into an
auxiliary cruiser and assigned at first to the Northern Patrol Squadron and later to the North Atlantic Fleet. During theSpanish-American War , she served inCuba n waters July and August 1898, and returned toFore River, Massachusetts ,August 28 . She decommissionedMarch 15 ,1899 at Philadelphia.Prairie was placed in reserve commission
March 23 ,1899 and cruised with thenaval militia off the Atlantic coast until she was decommissioned at New YorkFebruary 18 ,1901 . She carried government exhibits toFrance at the turn of the century for the Paris Exposition. She was recommissioned at BostonNovember 9 ,1901 as a training ship, and remained with this mission until she was decommissioned at BostonJune 14 ,1905 .She was recommissioned
September 26 ,1906 at Boston as atransport and was attached to the Atlantic Fleet. She protected American interests inCuba , March to April 1907. Later, she resumed her training duties with the naval militia from May to September 1907, July to August 1908 and July to August 1909. It took part on the U.S. occupation of Veracruz in 1914.Converted to a
destroyer tender in late 1917, "Prairie" served as one duringWorld War I .Prairie was decommissioned
November 22 ,1922 atSan Diego, California , and was struck from the Navy List. She was soldJune 22 ,1923 to Louis Rothenberg,Oakland, California .References
