Kioloa, New South Wales

Kioloa, New South Wales

Kioloa is a small hamlet located on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is referred to by locals as Kiola.

The Australian National University's Kioloa Coastal Campus is north of the town.

Its neighbour is Bawley Point. Both of these villages rely mainly upon tourism as a source of income. Kioloa has 3 caravan parks and 2 general stores. The area is well known throughout the region for its pristine beaches and peak surfing conditions. As an isolated coastal retreat, Kioloa is infamous among holiday-goers for its lack of mobile phone reception. In what has become a phenomenon known as "going to the boaty for sepo", each night of the holiday season, hordes of campers and caravaners may be observed congregating at the boat ramp near the southern point of Kioloa Beach, the only location offering any mobile reception for several kilometres. "Sepo" is a typical Australian abbreviation meaning "reception".
