Background

Clarence Dock was designed by Carey Jones Architects as part of the redevelopment in the south-east area of Leeds city centre.[1] It was constructed to help reduce studentification in the Hyde Park and Headingley areas in the north of the city centre.[2] The site was completed in 1993. During vacation periods, the bar and shop are usually closed, and during the July-September vacation, the student accommodation is let out as a hostel.

Layout and location

Layout of the Blocks, top of picture is in North-East direction

Student accommodation comprises fourteen blocks labelled A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N and P. Blocks C and D are the tallest and have lifts inside them, with three flats on every floor. The remaining blocks have either three and four floors and two flats per floor. Each flat contains five or six single occupancy, en suite study bedrooms and a shared kitchen. There is a bar, fitness gym, launderette (with vending machines) and a site office. The warden and site manager live in larger flats above the shop and office respectively, with a kitchenette, lounge, bathroom and double bedroom.

The site is situated on the banks of the River Aire at the edge of the middle of the new Clarence Dock development, including the Royal Armouries Museum, a Holiday Inn and several blocks of luxury flats. It is approximately 40 minute walk from the University. It is marketed to students as being close to the city centre, although Sentinel Towers in Burley is closer to the city centre. There are some closer city centre student residences belonging to Leeds Metropolitan University near Leeds City bus station.

Warden service

A member of University of Leeds staff acts as resident warden at Clarence Dock, and is supported by a team of six mature students who act as subwardens. The warden service handles accommodation problems outside office hours, including emergency repairs, lockouts and noise complaints. Advisory sessions are available each week for residents to speak to the warden about accommodation and welfare issues. The warden is also responsible for implementing university disciplinary procedures on site.[3]
