- John Lorber
John Lorber (1915–1996) was a professor of
paediatrics at theUniversity of Sheffield from 1979 until his retirement in 1981. He worked before at the Children's Hospital of Sheffield where he became renowned for his work onspina bifida .He is also known for his writings on
medical ethics , against use of intensive medication for severely handicapped infants, and against activeeuthanasia .In 1980,
Roger Lewin published an article in Science, "Is Your Brain Really Necessary?" [cite journal | author=Roger Lewin | title=Is Your Brain Really Necessary? | journal=SCIENCE | date=December 12, 1980 | volume=210 | pages=1232–1234 | doi=10.1126/science.7434023 | pmid=7434023 ] , about Lorber studies on cerebral cortex losses. He reports the case of a Sheffield University student who had a standard intellectual development although his cortex was extremely reduced byhydrocephalus .Ajahn Brahm is a Buddhist monk who is the leader of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. Their website is www.bswa.org. He gives a talk that mentions this Sheffield U case. Specifically, he said he dropped out of college and ordained as a monk when he learned that this student functioned well with no brain.
