Bolventor

Bolventor

Bolventor is a hamlet, which lies in the heart of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Daphne du Maurier, a former resident, chose Bolventor as the setting for "Jamaica Inn", her novel about Cornish smugglers. The original coaching house, Jamaica Inn, that inspired the novel has stood on the main road through the village since 1547, and now dominates. Bolventor once stood on the main road through Cornwall (latterly designated the A30), but has now been bypassed by the dual carriageway. The small church that lies to the east of the village closed some years ago.

The village is said to take its name from the "Bold Venture" that it must have appeared to build a farm in this moorland, but this is probably folk etymology, as "Bol-" is a common prefix in Cornish placenames.
