It opened on 6 July1840, resited five years later, and remained open until its closure on 3 May 1926, when all passenger services on the line east of Stepney ceased.

No trace of the station remains today, as the area has been heavily redeveloped. It was sited on Brunswick Road near the Poplar shipyards, which are today occupied by a ventilation shaft for the Blackwall Tunnel and a small power station. The station site is now occupied by Blackwall DLR station, and is some distance of east of its namesake, Poplar DLR station.

To add to the confusion, there was another station known as Poplar, on the North London Railway which was to the north-west of this station by the East India Dock Road, on the site of the current All Saints DLR station. This was often referred to as Poplar (East India Dock Road) to avoid confusion with the L&BR station.
