Following the incorporation of Kaimon and Yamagawa (two towns formerly belonging to Ibusuki District) on January 1, 2006, the city has an estimated population of 45,039 and a population density of 302 persons per km² (based on 2008 population statistics). It covers 149.01 km² and shares a border with Ei, a town to its north.

Ibusuki can be accessed by Routes 226 and 269 and the Ibusuki Skyline drive. The city also has a railroad station.

Ibusuki is famous for black-sand spas known as "sunamushi onsen".

Ibusuki has a sister city relationship with Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.
