682 ) was a pupil ofAbdullah ibn Abbas and a famous "tabi'i" ascetic ofKufa . Constantly ill with a form ofpalsy , in later generations he became a symbol of endurance in the face of suffering. He emphasized the importance of silence, scrupulousness in religious observance, and the fear of Hell. Many traditions in the collection of "Sahih Bukhari " are given on his authority. [Mashahir, 99-Too;Ghaya , 1. 283; Abu Nu`aym, II. 105-19; Kashif, I. 235; Ibn Marthad 41-3]Abu Hayan related that his father said, Al-Rabi ibn Khuthaym was crippled and used to be carried to the congregational "
salah " (prayer). So people told him, 'You have an excuse (for not coming)', he said, 'I hear "hayee alas-salah", the call to salah; so if you can come to it even by crawling, do so," paraphrasing a "hadith ". [Jannah.Org, "Striving in Worship"]Notes
