names=CE Tauri, HR 1845, HD 36389, BD+18°875, HIP 25945, SAO 94628, GC 6841119 Tauri is a
star in theconstellation Taurus. It is one of the largest stars known, having adiameter 510 times that of theSun .119 Tauri is a M-type
red supergiant with a meanapparent magnitude of +4.32. It is approximately 1920light years fromEarth . It is classified as a semiregularvariable star and its brightness varies from magnitude +4.23 to +4.54 with a period of 165 days. With acolour index of +2.07, 119 Tauri has been identified as the second reddest star in the night sky to shine consistently at anaked eye brightness well above the 5th magnitude. [ [http://www.astroscience.org/abdul-ahad/ruby-star.htm "Realm of the majestic ruby star in Taurus"] , October 19, 2004.] Down to a limiting magnitude of +5, it is superseded in redness only by theGarnet Star (Mu Cephei).The star is sometimes referred to as the Ruby Star, and lies 4.6 degrees off theecliptic . This makes it a candidate foroccultation s by theMoon and (extremely rarely) by one of the bright planets.The angular diameter of 119 Tauri has been measured in three colors by lunar occultation.
