Amman Valley Railway

Amman Valley Railway

The Amman Valley Railway is a heritage railway project in the Amman Valley, near Llanelli in west Wales. The line that the project is based on is one of a number of lines, some of which carried passengers, but many of which were colliery branch lines, serving the various collieries of the area between Swansea and Llanelli.

The Amman Valley project is aiming to help bring tourists and trade to the valley, one of the many areas that suffered after the collapse of most heavy industry in South Wales, and in many ways differs from that of most other volunteer-run railways.

They are hoping to be able to give train rides behind steam locomotives, and are planning to buy three tank engines of a common, popular build from Poland, almost all of which have been sold to the highest bidder since they were put out of railway use in the 1990s. They are similar in many ways to the Great Western Railway pannier tank locomotives.

In mid-2006, a Class 103 diesel multiple unit vehicle was purchased for restoration and eventual use on the line. This is M50397, formerly of the Denbigh & Mold Junction Railway.
