Prestegjeld

A Prestegjeld is a geographic and administrative area of the Church of Norway ("Den Norske Kirke") roughly equivalent to a parish. A "prestegjeld" can consist of one or many congregations. In a "prestegjeld", there are usually several clerical positions (chaplains) serving under the administration of a head minister ("sogneprest" or "sokneprest").

Norway is geographically divided into 11 dioceses. The dioceses is further divided into 100 urban or rural deaneries "(prosti)". Each of those is divided into 1,298 "prestegjeld" or parishes. Each parish is made up of one or more sub-parishes or congregations ("sogn" or "sokn").
