Ohio , Schrock earned a degree fromAlderson-Broaddus College in1964 and a Masters Degree in Public Relations fromAmerican University in1975 . He also served in theUnited States Navy from1964 to1988 , including two tours of duty inVietnam . Schrock then worked as an investment broker and served in theVirginia State Senate from1995 to2001 . In 2000, he was elected to the U.S. House seat in Virginia's 2nd District, defeating the Democratic Party nominee,Jody Wagner , a Norfolk attorney who later became State Treasurer of Virginia. During his four years in Congress, he served on the Armed Services Committee, Budget Committee, Small Business Committee, and Government Reform Committee. In his first term in Congress, Schrock was elected president of the Republican Freshman ClassFact|date=August 2008.Schrock announced on
August 30 ,2004 , that he would abort his 2004 attempt for a third term in Congress.
