SouthPark (Charlotte neighborhood)

SouthPark is a neighborhood and edge city in Charlotte, North Carolina, USAGR|3. Its name is derived from a shopping mall of the same name located within the neighborhood. The area is geographically centered at the intersection of Fairview Road and Sharon Road in the south central sector of the city, about six miles south of Uptown. The neighborhood was once a part of a 3,000 acre (12 km²) farm owned by former North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison [http://www.newcomer.com/cities/charlotte/CHLTsouthsouthwest.html Newcomer: South/Southwest Charlotte] ] . In addition to being home to the mall, SouthPark is also a residential center and one of the largest business districts in Charlotte and the state of North Carolina, with an estimated 40,000 employees.

Commerce

SouthPark is the home to the Fortune 500 company Nucor, as well as National Gypsum, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, Piedmont Natural Gas and J.A. Jones Construction Company. Maersk, Bank of America Mortgage, First Citizens Bank, and CSX have major divisional operations located in SouthPark. The architecturally notable Rotunda Building is also located in SouthPark. All these factors make SouthPark an edge city.

Entertainment

SouthPark is also the home of the Charlotte Symphony’s Summer Pops concerts, performed at the new amphitheater (Symphony Park) at SouthPark [http://www.charlottesymphony.org/summer.htm Charlotte Symphony - Summer Pops] ] . These free evening concerts are one of the mall’s two signature community events. The other is a Christmas tradition – the annual Christmas tree lighting, which takes place on Thanksgiving DayFact|date=May 2007.
