The borough was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of the borough of Ilkeston, the Long Eaton urban district and part of South East Derbyshire Rural District.

In the May 2005 General Election, the constituency seat was contested by, amongst others, Robert Kilroy-Silk of Veritas and R. U. Seerius of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party.
