Tañon Strait lies between the islands of
Negros and Cebu in thePhilippines . Thestrait connects theVisayan Sea to theBohol Sea .On
February 7 ,2008 theSupreme Court of the Philippines ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Energy to comment on a certiorari petition filed fortoothed whales ,dolphins ,porpoises and othercetacean species in the Tañon Strait to stopoil exploration by Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. Ltd. (Japex) in the protectedwaterway . Thestrait is a marine wildlife reserve, breeding, feeding and resting ground for 11 of the 25 marine mammals. The court was asked to recognize the petitioners as "Filipino mammals" with constitutional rights.
